Casting the Role: Listen Beyond the “Sound.”
You have submitted your audition to trusted voice agents and you’ve received a bunch of audition candidates back for each role. It’s decision time!
The most important thing to listen for in an audition is the actor’s performance!
- Don’t just listen for a vocal tone or pitch in the character’s voice– Listen instead for the actor’s connection to the character. If the voice or tone is off a bit, but the read is close, the performer can often be directed.
- Take your time when reviewing auditions.
- Be open to possibilities!
- Remember to think of a voice actor as sculptable clay- not a finished block of wood! You mold a performance in session!
- A ballpark good audition could be directed to exactly right with a good voice actor/voice director combo.
- Try to listen all the way through the auditions.
- If you like what you hear from auditions that’s great! But if you want to explore or fine tune performance, have callbacks! You can hone in on making sure you have exactly what works.
