Get it right from the start! You’ll be glad you did!
Why is voice acting so important for video games? It breathes life into the spine of your game.
When you get it right:
- Memorable characters come to life.
- Storytelling becomes more compelling.
- Your game delivers a more immersive cinematic experience.
- Ultimately…it will save you time, money & energy!
Three Stages of Game VO
- Brainstorming the Character -Think about your character BEYOND their sound or pitch of voice.
- Casting the Role -Find the perfect talent to make your character EPIC.
- Recording the Dialogue -Create the right environment for creative exploration.
All stages are equally important!
Brainstorming the Character
Flesh out the Character “Sketch” with relevant specifics.
Topics to think about:
- What is the theme, tone, philosophy of the game you are producing?
- What is the character’s backstory?
- How does the character fit into the game/story?
- What is the character’s “B-side?” (Biggest fear, biggest dream)
- What is the character’s status?
- What is the energy or tone of this character?
- What is the “heart” of the character? Ultimate motivation?
- After considering these specifics, then turn to “What should this character sound like?”
Remember, although some characters may only appear briefly or peripherally, they still merit thoughtful attention to give them believability and reality.
Thinking about audition or performance script: They should “set the stage” for the actor. If the stage isn’t fully set, the actor must guess at all of these variables, often resulting in a character read that doesn’t play right, that that doesn’t fit the game you are making.
Keep it simple, salient and specific!
Provide context for each scene, lead-in dialog, action words, a few adjectives may be all it takes. This applies to lead roles as well as minor ones!
